Nose job Bandage

The last stage of the nose job is dressing and bandaging, which is usually done with a number of nasal tapes, tampons inside the nostrils, and splints on the nose. But one of the questions that are raised in the meantime is “how long tampons should stay in the nose” and other such questions.

In this article, we discuss the topics related to dressing and bandages of the nose.

How is the dressing after rhinoplasty?

After the operation we will not tampon your nose, therefore you will be able to breathe immediately after surgery. For more extensive nose corrections such as removal of a bump it may become necessary to wear a plaster splint for about two weeks.

In this article, we discuss the topics related to dressing and bandages of the nose.

How is the dressing after rhinoplasty?

One of the cares that has a great effect on the result of a nose job is the dressing after rhinoplasty, which if the method of dressing and care of the nose is not done properly, may disrupt the healing process of the nose after surgery.

Rhinoplasty — even if performed by the most experienced and skilled surgeon — can lead to some complications from surgery. The chance is about 5 to 10 percent, but if the dressing is not taken seriously after rhinoplasty, the chances of complications will increase dramatically.

What is a nasal dressing?

Nasal dressing is performed after rhinoplasty by placing a splint on the nose and sterile gauze under the nose. The sum of splint and sterile gauze is called nasal dressing.

The nasal splint should stay on the nose for a week, but you can change the sterile gauze under the nose yourself every six hours. Usually after surgery, you will have bloody nasal discharge from the nose for up to two days due to injuries, and in fact, sterile gauze under the nose is used to prevent this nasal discharge. The presence of bloody nasal discharge is normal for a few days after a nose job and you should not be concerned. Once the nasal discharge has stopped, you can no longer use sterile gauze under the nose.

After the operation we will not tampon your nose, therefore you will be able to breathe immediately after surgery. For more extensive nose corrections such as removal of a bump it may become necessary to wear a plaster splint for about two weeks.

Rhinoplasty is surgery to reshape your nose. It can be done to improve your appearance, fix a birth defect, or help you breathe better.

You may have stitches or staples in your cuts (incisions). Stitches inside your nose and mouth will usually dissolve on their own. If you have staples, your doctor will take these out in the first week. A bandage will cover your nose. You may have a plastic or plaster splint to protect and help keep the new shape of your nose. You may have a “nasal drip pad” under your nostrils to collect any blood that may drip from your nose. Your doctor will show you how to change the pad as needed. You may have packing material inside your nose to reduce bleeding and swelling. Packing and the nasal drip pad will be removed within 2 days after surgery. The splint will be removed in about a week.

What is a nasal tampon?

In the past, tampons were used to shape the middle septum of the nose and keep it straight, as well as to prevent bleeding after rhinoplasty.

Tampons were sanitary pads that were soaked in ointment and placed on either side of the middle septum in each of the nostrils. Tampons pressed against the middle septum of the nose, keeping the middle septum clean and free of bleeding.

The tampon existence was difficult for the patient to bear and it was also very painful and uncomfortable to remove it.

Fortunately, with the modern surgical techniques, we usually no longer need to use tampons today. In fact, the middle septum of the nose is flattened in such a way that it does not need a holder such as a tampon to hold it. Also, because the accuracy of suturing the mucous membranes of the middle septum of the nose has increased, the possibility of bleeding is greatly reduced.
